Checked out the new house

Post by GeneMO »

About 10 miles West of Fort Lost in the Woods Missouri. I could hear the artillery firing when we got out of the vehicle. My place is bordered on 2 1/2 sides by the Mark Twain National forest, so no one will ever build there. I found out it is in Bear Mgt. Zone 3, so I am putting in for a bear hunting permit. The Rouibeaux and Gasconade river is close. The Roubideaux is close enough to ride the Side-by-side to. There are trout in it. The place has a nice30X50 shop. 5 acres and when the leaves are on, totally hidden, so my one requirement of being able to pee off the deck are met.

Another bonus, is there is a really nice totally enclosed in concrete gun room, with a factory, steel safe door.

I am gonna cry when I leave the hunting cabin, house, shop and farm, but I can see the writing on the wall.

Another chapter starts.

Just a cautionary tale: a friend of mine had a very large collection of vintage firearms, at least a couple hundred of many types, including many Civil War era. He had a concrete gun room built under the new house he had built, steel doors and all. He had a moisture problem, but kept it under control with a dehumidifier.

He and his wife went away on vacation for a week. When they returned, they discovered that the dehumidifier had quit, apparently around the time they left for vacation. Every gun was covered with moisture and every gun had a thin coating of rust on it.

True story. Beware of humidity in concrete rooms. Especially if they are below grade.

Have had the same experience as mentioned with underground hidy hole built in basement under front porch. On a bright side of things I just picked some daffy dills for the wife. Spring is not here yet but is getting wound pretty tight :D

I wondered about the humidity problem. I wish/hope there is a drain the room, so I can run the water right on down. Otherwise, you have to empty the catch bucket quite often. Dehumidifiers suck a lot of electricity. I have a nice gun safe and keep on of those "golden rod" heaters in there. It works great.

Thanks for the tip.
