Nope, didn’t get it, and I think now maybe the one son was hinting for one for himself, not me. I’m trying to decide whether to buy one for myself now, or one of those nice working steam engine models I have been looking at lately. Or use the money to get off my butt and fund a hunting trip with my dog. Choices, choices…!

Beekeeper, I am of the opinion that getting off one's butt and a hunting trip with the dog would be the best choice. Save the other two for when you get old.

My hips are giving me trouble. And my coon hunting buddy just had surgery, so he is laid up. So no coon hunting. My rabbit hunting buddy will no doubt still come out and bring his beagles. We do it the lazy way though. We can run over my place and the neighbors, so we have about 200 acres of draws, brush piles, downed timber and the damned multi-flora rose. Anyway, good rabbit hunting, so we can run the side by side around the little fingers of timber. We can drive along the edge in the hay field, and my place is mostly timber, but I have paths cut all through it. So we ride and watch the dogs hunt.

My canon is just a piece of steel tubing. It is a 1" bore, and the walls are about 3/4' thick. We cut it about 3' long, cut the one end at a 45 degree angle. Then, put a piece of 1' round rod in the end, that was also cut at an angle. We then welded the angled part to a piece of 4" wide channel iron, and put an angled piece of flat iron for a brace or support. A fuse hole was drilled in front of the plug. It doesn't look very sexy or authentic, but when loaded up heavy, an tamped real tight with news paper, it makes one Hell of a boom. Echos all over the creek bottoms. The neighbors 3-4 miles away tell us they can hear it very clearly.

Gene — funny coincidence, I used to do the same thing. Then one day something went very wrong with one of my contraptions and it blew up while I was nearby. Long story short, my Dad took me to a nearby Army Hospital emergency room (Dad was retired Army and it was our regular hospital), and the doctor on duty just happened to have recently returned from Vietnam treating helicopter crews for burns and his treatment made sure I didn’t have any serious scarring.

BOTTOM LINE is that I don’t do any homemade guns or explosives since. Too dangerous, too easy to get hurt or killed.

I have "proof" tested this one. Loaded it up as heavy as I could, put a long, long fuse on it, and went and hid behind a tree. It will shoot a C flashlight battery through a 4"diameter tree.

When we do shoot it, we still either put it behind a big tree, or we go hide behind a big tree. I never trust things that blow up.

Glad you kept all yer finger and toes. I can't believe I was never seriously hurt.
