The "solution" is worse than the problem?

I keep 25 or 30 types of plastic shapes in various sizes - tubing, square tubing, flat stock, rod, angle, T, etc. for my modeling.

Being essentially lazy, I like to keep all the commonly used stuff close at hand so I can just spin around on my stool and grab what I want. Plus, I inherited the German gene for organization, bordering on OCD.

The plastic shapes are packaged in plastic "envelopes" about 12 inches long. I built a set of cubby holes to keep them in and that worked but the shape wasn't visible without fumbling around with the envelopes and peeking in the end plus looking at the label to get the right size - 3/32 square tubing vs. 1/8 for instance.

So, I ordered a set of clear plastic tubes from China-Zon and transferred all the shapes to the clear tubes, cut the labels off the original envelopes and taped them to the tubes with sizes and part numbers (for re-order) and tucked the tubes in the cubby. Better. I can see everything pretty much at a glance.

Then I thought, "Ya know, a rack to stand them in vertically would be the cat's vocalization!" So I lugged them out to the garage, measured the various tubes (5 different diameters) found drill bits to accommodate each and started sketching the "test tube rack" I pictured in my mind.

The more I sketched and thought about the work involved and where I was going to put the new storage the more I started thinking "This is way more work than it's worth, and there's no place handy to put it without a MAJOR reorganization of my work station." And for once, common sense managed to override OCD and now the plastic tubes are all back in the cubby...

I have BTDT. Generally my big ideas come from hours spent in the tractor seat mowing, or in the deer stand. I have found that My mind is way more capable of dreaming up shit, than my old body can accomplish.

But keep at it. Keeps ya young !
