Compressed air question for the brain trust

I know this may seem simple, but I am a simple man

I am replacing the faulty manifold on my little, portable air tank. Bought the replacement manifold at Tractor supply. When installing that, brass threads into the steel threads of the tank, is it best, or appropriate to use a teflon based "pipe dope", or should a person use the white, sealant tape?

I have used both interchangeably in the past. Sometimes on the pipe dope, it dries and I have seen pieces of it drop inside when removing fittings, and then with the tape, when removing it I have seen piece of it floating around, plus. When I took of the old manifold, I had use the tape on it previously, and I had to take a ice pick and dig it out of the threads.

Anyway, it just got me to thinking, and I know someone on here is probably an expert.

Of late, I've been using tape directly on the threads, and a thin coat of dope over the tape.

Belt-and-suspenders, ya know...

Guy where I use to work made fun of me wearing a belt and suspenders. But like I told him, with regular jeans, I needed the belt to put my pliers holder on.

Thanks, Gene

Not a 'xpert, but I would use Teflon tape.

Hold it back one thread from the end. That helps to keep it out of your tank.
Learned that from an 'xpert.

That is a good plan. I dont do it enough, that I always have to stop and cogitate on which way to wrap it so it doesn't want to ball up when I tighte it. I may be partially dyslexic I think at times. :D

Thanks, Gene

So I did the combo tape and dope idea. Worked good, but I stupidly put the wrong thing, in the wrong hole. Hope that doesn't bring back any bad memories.

Anyway, I will go down in a bit and replumb it.
